As some of you know, The Independent is NEIU’s student-run newspaper, since the late 1980s, whose articles are primarily focused on the NEIU campus, with the inclusion of our satellite campuses, El Centro and Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS). Since 2024, we have published on a monthly basis in order to share with our community. We also have our online website that is published year-round.
While we are considered a small university, there is so much that happens within our university that can be reported on, in a single activity hour alone, let alone a day. And while there are official announcements that occur from different departments, as well as social media connecting to student groups, there is always a space for students to do reporting.
The state of diminishing news media has been documented throughout the world, as well as within Chicago. Through myself and other staff who have had the opportunity to connect with students and local journalism outlets, there have been several shifts within the landscape that can’t be ignored. In terms of my own experiences, conversing with local media professionals, at least the struggles that have been faced within our publication, has also been similar to others.
While we still have a voice here, in our publication, we dedicate ourselves, as staff, to publishing truthful information that can be verified, as well as promoting our student voices. In those that are reported or for those that are interested in reporting.
We do ask for those who are interested in writing for us to contact us via the following;
