Since 1988, The Independent, the current incarnation of NEIU’S student newspaper, is a public forum for the university and the community surrounding Northeastern Illinois University and its satellite campuses, El Centro in the Avondale/Logan Square community and Jacob C. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies in Bronzeville. The Independent is completely student run and receives no prior review of its content by anyone other than its student editors and journalism advisor. 

The Independent is a member of the Illinois College Press Association and Associated Collegiate Press and has been the recipient of more than 60 awards, most notably for design and best in show.

Monthly Print deadlines are seven (7) days prior to the issue in which a contribution is to appear. Views expressed in letters are those of the university community and not those of the Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the content of the Independent, and views presented do not necessarily represent those of the administration, faculty or students.
