In response to ongoing complaints about stolen items and unauthorized access, NEIU’s Campus Recreation has taken steps to enhance security by installing alarms on the doors of the P.E. Complex. The increased student traffic, ongoing activities and efforts to boost student engagement necessitated this proactive step.
The unprecedented move was driven by student safety concerns and aims to ensure that all individuals in the building are either students or registered community members. The door alarms consolidate entry and exit points that allow for improved control and access to the building, according to Dr. James W. Ball, Professor and Chair of Health Sciences and Physical Education (HSPE).
“Our main focus was to ensure the safety of all our students and to make sure that there is only a single entry and exit to the building,” said Dr. Ball. “This way it helps us control who is coming in and out of the building.”
Feedback on the alarms has been minimal, and Dr. Ball mentioned that the HSPE department has yet to receive any positive or negative feedback from patrons regarding the alarms. The HSPE department has noticed a decrease in thefts and unauthorized entry of non-members. To date, there have been no recent complaints of stolen items from students. According to Dr. Ball, with the alarms now in place, Campus Recreation’s next focus will be on upgrading the doors to enhance security further.
