NEIU will receive a federal grant of $145,000 to create a Veterans Resource Center due to the efforts of Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL).
This announcement was made by Interim President, Dr. Katrina Bell-Jordan, in a Targeted Announcement email to NEIU faculty, students and staff on April 9, 2024.
“With the support of our dedicated Veterans Services Office staff, many of whom are veterans, Northeastern is committed to supporting servicemen and servicewomen as they transition to civilian life,” Bell-Jordan said in the email. “We sincerely thank Senator Duckworth for her invaluable support in securing this funding. With these resources, NEIU will significantly enhance our efforts to assist veteran students in pursuing higher education and striving toward fulfilling careers.”
“This federal grant is provided through the Congressional Directed Spending (CDS) program,” Duckworth said in the email. “This allows Members of Congress to request direct funding for projects that benefit their communities. Northeastern helps veterans apply for federal and Illinois veteran benefits, which include Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG); Illinois National Guard Grant (ING); MIA/POW Scholarship, and Illinois ROTC Scholarship (tuition waiver).”
The Veteran Services Office, located in Enrollment Services, is staffed by veterans to assist fellow veteran students at NEIU. According to NEIU’s website, “The Veterans Services Office is responsible for providing assistance and information to veterans attending and/or planning to attend Northeastern. This includes but is not limited to helping a veteran apply for admission to the university, apply for and use federal and state benefits, as well as providing general, non-academic university advice.”
The Veterans Service offices at NEIU provide veterans, current members of the military, and their families guidance on obtaining their federal and state education benefits.
The Veterans Service office is located in Building D, Room 130. Students can also contact Veteran Services via phone call at (773) 442-4005 or via email at [email protected].
