On Feb. 6, 2023, a pair of earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria, resulting in over 40,000 deaths as of this writing. There have been several thousand more injured, and several thousand buildings destroyed.

In the aftermath, there have been efforts made to help those affected by the earthquake. Islamic Relief USA, a non-profit organization, has helped Türkiye in the past and is currently raising money to help the victims of the earthquakes.

The Muslim Student Association (MSA) at NEIU held a bake sale on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023 in Village Square. It was held from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. with 100% of the proceeds made from the sale dedicated to Islamic Relief USA, as stated on their Instagram page the day of the bake sale. Some items at the sale were Turkish Delights, cupcakes, samosas, and other sweet and savory treats. Syed Jaleel, President of MSA, was present for the sale’s entirety. The club set the prices as pay-what-you-can, with different ways of payment including Zelle, Venmo, and cash.

For those interested in signing up for MSA, information about the association can be found on Instagram at @neiumsa, as well as on their Collegiate Link page.
