“MEXICA, Aztec Princess” is another Latina-led comic that was written by Kayden Phoenix, who also wrote fictional Latina superheroes like Bandita and Loquita from the “A La Brava” comic book series.
The story of “MEXICA” centers around the main character of the same name, as she must go through an initiation with her family to prove her worthiness of becoming the new princess. Leaving Aztlán, accompanied by her pet ocelot, Elote, she embarks on a journey to solve the riddles. Along the way, she suddenly encounters the Tlaxcala, a rival tribe that seeks to take control of the kingdom themselves.
The story of “MEXICA” is not only a heartwarming coming-of-age story, but it is also a cute story that represents the Aztec culture of Mexico very well. Not only did I see the pyramids from the era of the Aztec culture, but I also saw the characters wear traditional headpieces, clothing, and architecture. This was a whole love letter to an ancient time in Mexican history, as it was being told through the eyes of a young adolescent girl who goes through some obstacles along the way.
As always, Kayden Phoenix never misses with her comic books because not only is she showcasing her heritage in a beautiful and heartwarming way, but she is also paving the way for more Latin American artists who are either Chicana, third-generation Mexican, or queer. I hope that Kayden will continue to write more Latin American-centered stories in the near future because, as much as “MEXICA” centers on pre-colonial Mexico. The one thing that will always stand out is the message of the story, which is to always be yourself and never give up despite the odds that are thrown at you, which is what Mexica does in the story when she conquers the obstacles that get in her way of trying to solve the riddles.
