School isn’t just for classes. Here at NEIU, we have a lot of events from different departments that are around different campuses. From clubs, frats, and university wide events, here are some events that are coming up:

The International Club

Every Wednesday, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., LWH 1001

Expect to learn a lot from different cultures, travel around Chicago and see things from a new perspective. 

Club events: The next meeting on Sept. 21 will be a bake sale, at Village Square from 1 – 5 p.m. or until supplies last.

 

Pinoy Club

Every other Tuesday

Undocumented, Resilient and Organized  (URO)

Every other Monday

1 – 2 p.m, Main Campus, SU 216 or via Zoom

Club events: There is an Organization workshop on Sept 21, from 2:30 – 4pm and a Sip and Paint on the 22th in the Quad from 3 – 4 pm. 

 

NEIU Asian American Intervarsity

3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Wednesdays

11a.m. – 12 p.m.  and 3 – 4 p.m. Thursdays

A safe space for Asian Americans to explore faith in Jesus. There are three different meeting times; there are Bible study Wednesdays, Holy Spirit on Campus Thursdays, and Asian American Small group Thursdays.

 

The Independent

Club events:

The meeting on Tuesday Sept. 20, will be the pitch meeting, interested people can give ideas as to what articles they could write/take pictures or take up any open pitches. The deadline for receiving articles is the following Tuesday, Sept. 27, which is the date for the production meeting.

ChicagoCHEC 7th Annual Community Forum: Cancer Health and Mental Wellness – YOU, Family, Community

The theme for this year is Cancer Health and Mental Wellness. The event is free for all, sign up is needed. Those that attend in person will receive lunch and on-site parking.

Film screening: “La Negrada,”

CCICS, Donn F. Bailey Legacy Hall

 

A Mexican- oriented  film about the Afro-Mexican community, filmed entirely with Black people from different towns around the Costa Chica in Oaxaca. Directed by Jorge Pérez Solano. There are light refreshments being served during the event.

 

Latinx Art Gallery: Art in the Intersections of Latinx Identiny, Disability Justice and Undocumented Communties

3 – 5 p.m.

Artist Genevieve is a self-taught artist who is a part of the Cambiando Vidas organization, dedicated to Latinx people with disabilities. 

 

One Book, One Chicago: Art Spiegelman’s “The Complete Maus: A Survivor’s Tale”

5:30 – 7 p.m

Join in on a panel for processing The Complete Maus, a graphic novel, featuring several NEIU members. This event is open to the public, for the online link, you need to sign ahead of time.

The NEIU connection to the Rainbow Coalition

The speaker, Hy Thurman, an NEIU Alumnus, will talk about his book The Revolutionary Hillbilly.

 

Undocumented Student Ally Training

Cyber-Safe Families Conference

The conference focuses on engaging families in conversations about cybersecurity, along with safe online practices and career pathways. Free and open to the public, you would need to sign up. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 28

En la Cocina: Chef Maria Jose

Part of the Cultural Cooking series, the ingredients provided will be from the NEIU Student Pantry. Interested students will be able to make a healthy meal rooted in Latinx culture.

STEM Student Research Symposium

This event is for NEIU students who would be able to present their research findings as a presentation. The keynote speaker for said event is Christopher A.J Craddock, who has a PhD.

 

Film Screening: Indian Horse 

12 – 2:00 p.m.

Main Campus, Pedroso Center (Room 189)

 

An adaptation of Richard Wagamese’s novel, this film details the horrible history of Canada’s boarding schools and Indigenous Residential Schools. This film is being aired on National Orange shirt day, which is about the different aspects of residential and boarding schools.

 

Jewel Music Box

7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Main Campus, Recital Hall

 

The Jewel Music Box brings local, national and international artists. This event will have Robert Boyd and Laura Metcalf as the main event.
