African-centered Mental Health Discussion
December 9, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm CST
The Chicago Association of Black Psychologists hosts its annual pre-Kwanzaa celebration and community forum!
We will have food, music, fellowship and thoughtful conversation about culture and mental health. The topic of the discussion will be: “What’s actually African about African-centered Psychology?”
There will be a brief overview of how Blacks in America have conceptualized “Afrocentric” or “African-centered” and how it has been applied to mental health practice. Then we will engage in a critical discussion about the similarities/difference, and advantages/disadvantages of the Afrocentric psychology movement compared to the lived experiences of 1st and 2nd generation continental Africans who are not descendants of the American institution of chattel slavery. The goal is for us to learn from each other so we all can grow and be more connected.
