Jared Scovill, an intern in the Career Development Center, leads career resources for NEIU’s LGBTQI+ students, including a workshop series and a town hall event featuring openly identified professionals from various fields.
“Career Development is creating these resources because the LGBTQ community is underrepresented and [faces] unique challenges in the job hiring process. Research shows that if we openly [identify] that our compensation packages are 30% [those of] our cisgender peers, and callbacks for interviews can be up to 40% lower than [those of] our cisgender peers.” Scovill said.
The Career Development Center created these resources aimed to help LGBTQI+ students, Scoville said “But the research also shows that the sooner students in their college career start working with career development, [they] get offered larger compensation packages and they get hired faster. So building these resources for the career community is really about learning how to make more money when you’re done with your college career.”
NEIU’s LGBTQI+ students can attend the “Out and Proud in The Workplace” town hall event which will be held on March 25, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs.
“It will be a Q&A event where students will be able to ask what it’s like to be out in the workplace. I expect discussions to be had on discrimination, challenges and success stories.” Scoville said via email.
In addition, NEIU’s LGBTQI+ students can attend the workshop series hosted on March 13th and April 17th.
“So, the workshops are a chance for queer students to engage in communication and work collectively to find best practices for each individual person,” Scoville said.
Students can register on Handshake to attend these workshops, which will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room B-119.
