When I applied to attend Northeastern Illinois University, I told myself that I’m going to get involved on campus. I want to develop leadership skills and find a meaning for myself. At my previous college, Northern Illinois University, I felt so isolated and lonely. I felt like I did not belong. Instead of participating in events or activities, I stayed in my single dorm room and apartment bedroom waiting for the weekend to come.
Since coming here in the Fall 2023 semester, I’ve made so many connections and friendships from day one! During orientation, I came out of my comfort zone to talk to people. I joined the PIN@Y Club, Pride Alliance Club, and TRIO! These connections have helped me grow and build confidence in myself.
There are still some times where I feel like I don’t want to participate or be seen around campus. Sometimes I don’t want anyone to know me. But I know that those thoughts are what makes me feel isolated.
I want to encourage students to leave their comfort zones. If anyone out there feels like they’re alone or feel like they don’t belong, you’re not alone — I am there with you. Get out of your dorm rooms and participate in the events and activities the university has to offer. I feel lonely between classes, too. And I hate eating alone! We can have lunch together. We can talk about our day or we can do homework quietly together. There are so many ways to form a community here on campus, all you have to do is try!
