NEIU’s Black Student Success Committee creates Black Student Membership Fee Initiative
May 1, 2020
Northeastern Illinois University’s Black Student Success Committee started the Black Student Membership Fee Initiative to help Black students at NEIU navigate the realm of career development.
Interested students who identify as Black or African-American must apply for a one-time annual fee at any predominantly Black organization before May 15. In order to qualify for funding, students must find an organization that fits their career path and schedule a virtual appointment with Tim Mays, assistant director of Black Student Success at the Pedroso Center. There is no fee to apply.
“As a committee, we recognize that students need support beyond what we offer on campus in order to be successful in their chosen industry,” said Mays.
After receiving financial assistance from the committee, students can benefit from professional opportunities consistent with their academic or personal interests. Participating organizations include but are not limited to: The National Association of Black Journalists, National Black Nurses Association and the Black Lawyers Association.
The committee has supported over 20 students and have several appointments with students to come.
Perks of professional Black organizations include mentorship from an industry professional, networking, scholarship opportunities and discounted prices to attend conferences and more.
