Dr. Melvin C. Terrell, vice president for student affairs, has won the Monarch Award, an annual award presented by the Monarch Awards Foundation that salutes outstanding African American men in the Chicago area for their contributions to their professions and communities. Past honorees include Senator Barack Obama and local NBC news anchor Warner Saunders. The award will be presented at the Monarch Awards Gala.

The Monarch Awards Foundation sponsors community programs, awards scholarships to deserving high school and college students, and makes donations to charitable organizations.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this prestigious award,” said Terrell. “It has been my life goal to serve as a role model for students, to be of service to my community and to uplift the educational talent of our youth.”

Terrell, a Chicago native, has been the vice president of student affairs for 18 years. He is an active member of numerous professional organizations and is the current president of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP). He graduated from Chicago State University in 1971, Loyola University in 1974, and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where he earned his doctorate degree in higher education administration and black studies in 1978.

Socialists host Sherry Wolf

International Socialist Review editor, Sherry Wolf, was on campus Thursday, Sept. 21 in Classroom Building room 3031 discussing the United States’ involvement in the Middle East, particularly in Israel.

The open forum addressed the short but bloody war Israel waged against Lebanese terrorists over the summer and its seemingly direct correlation with the Israeli government’s treatment of the Palestinian people.

Citing the slaughter of over a thousand people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of refugees, the NEIU socialists sought to illustrate apparent racial hypocrisy being perpetrated by the United States and Israel.
