Around The Horn: MLB Roundup

Fall is quickly approaching and for baseball fans in Chicago, that means the end of another season. While it was a disappointing 2014, there are some exciting things to look for in 2015.

Although they’ve struggled throughout the entire season, the White Sox will finish the year with some positivity and hope because Jose Abreu, their star first baseman, will almost certainly be winning the Rookie of the Year award.

The resurgence of Albert Pujols has helped the Angels remain atop the American League West division.

With the approaching retirement of Paul Konerko and the recent trade of Adam Dunn, look for the White Sox to build a lineup around the current power arm of all-star Cris Sale and of course, Abreu.

Meanwhile on the Northside, the Cubs are quickly catching the eye of baseball fans and analysts alike as the end of the season approaches.

Led by their front office duo of Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer, the Cubs have managed to create the strongest farm system in baseball. As players like Arismendy Alcantara, Javier Baez and Jorge Soler are being developed and called up to the team, the Cubs are looking to contend for the playoffs in 2015 and begin the journey towards winning that coveted World Series.

As the last month of regular season baseball is recently underway, there are a few divisional races that will be interesting to watch. An arguably underdog team, the Kansas City Royals, can prove to be tough if they manage to make it out of the AL Central with first place. They have a small lead on the Detroit Tigers, while both teams keep their eye on one of the two wild card playoff spots.

Meanwhile in the American League East, the Baltimore Orioles are looking to finish what they started last season and hold sole possession of first place heading into the playoffs. Led by former Texas Ranger Nelson Cruz, the O’s have been one of the best offensive teams in baseball all season.

Lastly, the AL West. Even with the many star acquisitions they made at the trade deadline, the Oakland Athletics have not been able to catch the red-hot Los Angeles Angels who own the best record in baseball. Oakland is likely to land one of the two wild card spots and can certainly be a serious threat in October.

The battle for the National League Central crown looks like it is going to come down to the last few games of the season.

After leading the division almost the entire second half of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers are finding themselves suddenly trailing the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers must find their way out of this tailspin if they hope to be playing playoff baseball.

The NL East has been often dominated by the Atlanta Braves in recent years. That may change this season as the Washington Nationals lead the division with just a few weeks left before the postseason.

Nothing can fire up a rivalry more than a ticket to the postseason on the line. For National League West rivals Dodgers and Giants, this is the case. While in the American League West, the Angels hold a lead over rivals Oakland and Seattle, while both continue to battle for a wild card spot.

The close standings are setting up what is sure to be an exciting rest of the season and postseason.

While both Chicago teams will be watching these games from home, the future looks bright for both sides of the city.
